Rad Hourani Interview at Arab Fashion Week (2016)

Event: Arab Fashion Week
Location: The Meydan Hotel, Dubai
Date: October 2016

Overview:
In 2016, I had the privilege of interviewing visionary designer Rad Hourani during Arab Fashion Week in Dubai. This event marked a significant milestone as it was the first time Hourani showcased his revolutionary unisex collection in the Middle East. His avant-garde designs aim to transcend traditional boundaries, particularly those of gender, promoting a vision of neutrality and inclusivity.

The Collection:
Hourani's Spring-Summer 2017 collection, presented in Dubai, was a reimagined compilation of his past works, emphasizing the timelessness of his decade-long commitment to genderless fashion. The collection featured both male and female models donning thick, intricately draped fabrics in neutral tones, all accessorized with dark sunglasses. This presentation underscored his minimalist aesthetic and dedication to clean, architectural lines.

Creative Philosophy:
Reflecting on his journey, Hourani noted the initial challenges he faced in introducing unisex fashion, stating:

"People didn't really understand it at the beginning. They were always asking which pieces are for men and which pieces are for women."

Over the past decade, he has diligently worked to communicate his neutral unisex vision, which has now become his signature style. His work continues to inspire and pave the way for a more inclusive and boundary-free approach to design.

Personal Reflection:
This interview provided a unique insight into Hourani's philosophy and creative process, highlighting his unwavering commitment to challenging norms and redefining fashion's landscape. The experience reinforced my belief in the transformative power of fashion as a medium for cultural dialogue and societal change.
